NEW STORY
THE FOX AND THE DOG
DARO LAWAND
On a little hill lived two little friends, one was a fox and the other was a dog. The quick and brown fox jumped over its lazy friend, Fox usually did this from time to time but not as much as he was doing it now.
“Would you stop jumping over me for just one minute you malformed rat?!” The fox ignored the snarky remark and continued jumping over him.
Fox replied by saying “Then why don’t you get up on your chubby little legs and help? It wouldn’t kill you if that’s what your little brain is thinking, all I do is go and steal food from the farmers and you just sit here as if there is no problem even when they are currently now setting bear traps near their food stores.” Dog then grunted, got up and threateningly said “So what are you going to do about it? You know how I helped you get out of that human’s house and you know very well what would have happened to you if I hadn’t broken you out, you know that you would have ended up as a taxidermy statue as a trophy just like that wildebeest and that deer, so don’t talk to me about help.” What dog said wasn’t fully true, what truly happened that night was not as eventual as Dog made it sound, Fox was not broken out by Dog, all he did was open the front door for Fox even though he could have easily went back out through the broken window he came in from, and the taxidermies were not actually taxidermies, they were just colored statues.
“What?” Fox exclaimed, “It was nothing of that sort! You didn’t rescue me, and the statues you call taxidermies where just statues so don’t flatter yourself you filthy mutt!” Arguments were very common among
Fox and Dog, but it never really extended much further than who gets to eat the leftovers or whether it was worth stealing the new farmer’s guest’s food or not.
“So that’s how you’ll put it then?” said Dog, he knew that he was wrong and he just wanted an excuse to get Fox to stay and keep stealing food from the farmers and he knew better than Fox did that Dog can’t gather food by himself. And right then the friendship between Fox and Dog ended, Fox simply turned around and started walking away, and when Dog was out of sight it turned into a run. The same thing went for Dog but in the opposite direction but no running was involved, he was too sad to run and even if he could he wouldn’t. Fox ran and ran until he passed out and the last thing he saw was lots of green, an otter and a large muscular spotted figure. After waking up, Fox saw the otter and the large figure which turned out to be a jaguar talking, it was a very strange thing to see, not in a century would anyone imagine an otter and a jaguar talking. “Are you awake? Are you alive? What are you? An oversized rat with sharp teeth? Or maybe a dwarf lion which has not grown a mane?” The jaguar said, it was certainly not something you would expect a jaguar to say, much less talk at all. “Calm down before you scare it to death! Show some manners to our guest, and what is a lion?” While the otter and the jaguar started arguing, they paid no attention to Fox as he snuck into one of the owl nests. “Finally, I’m away from those two blabbermouths.” Fox said to himself. But he wasn’t aware that a horned owl was behind him. “Who are you talking to and what are you doing in my nest?” The owl said, Without looking
behind himself he let out a shriek and threw himself out of the hole in the nest without another thought. He wasn’t acting unreasonably though,
who would want to get in trouble with something that has sharp talons and a sharp beak, and eyes that can see you from an extraordinarily long distance?
“You got in trouble with that bothersome avian didn’t you? And would you please stop running away? We need to find our friend, and we need your help.” Fox’s first day at the jungle was not as uneventful as he thought it would be, an otter, nowhere near a body of water accompanied by an unusually curious jaguar is asking for help to find another friend of theirs and he was almost torn to shreds by a grumpy horned owl. “If I help you find your friend will you please leave me alone?” Fox was in a frenzy he had traveled very far without stopping, to eat, sleep or drink and he passed out once more. “Is he dead? Because if it is then I’m not going to let you pin the blame on me just like you did with that prairie dog, and the chubby vole or that gazelle, wait no the gazelle does not count.” Jaguar said frantically, Otter shot a dirty look his way and said “Of course it’s not dead! Why would you think of such a horrible thing, it does not even look dead. You can clearly see that it’s alive! Aren’t you supposed to have better hearing than me anyway? Are you deaf? Don’t you ever say such a horrible thing ever again and even if you ever do you better hope that I was not within hearing range.”
Otter squeaked loudly, Jaguar was amazed to hear such a loud and high pitched voice could come from such a little being. “What are you staring at idiot? Get this poor fox up the tree while I go and catch fish for it and don’t try to bury it if that’s what you were going to do and please just don’t do anything stupid beyond reason for just this one time.”
“I will try not to.” Jaguar grumbled, being yelled at by an otter was not pleasant even for a jaguar. Jumping up branches of a tree was not a problem for Jaguar alone but if he was going to carry a fox up to the top then the process would really slow down and it took Jaguar until dawn to get all the way up to the top. Otter also came up the tree with three fish in his mouth, by midnight the entire forest was asleep. In the morning all three of them had woken up but Fox was still half asleep and to counter that, Otter kept pinching him until he was fully up. None of them talked to each other for a few minutes and Fox was the first to talk. “So who is this friend of yours who needs to be found?” Fox said. They hadn’t eaten the fish yet so neither of them was in the mood to talk yet, after having a quiet meal this time Otter was the one who broke the silence and began “Our friend is a sloth and yes I know that it’s already ridiculous enough that I’m friends with a jaguar but regardless, he was still a good and wise friend to us and The Jungle. This didn’t exactly answer Fox’s question, “ Why would a sloth even be in a jungle and how would it come to be a friend of an otter and a jaguar?” Fox wondered. “Doesn’t anyone else want to find this friend of yours if he or she is such a good friend of the entire jungle?” Fox asked, “The entire jungle wants her back, but they don’t really want to leave the jungle, much less go out of the boundaries of their home unless it’s for a meeting or hunting and scavenging for food or even get out of the jungle at all. None of the inhabitants of the jungle like the unknown, we haven’t met anyone not from the jungle until yesterday when you came. So will you help us?” Otter whispered in what was meant to be an intimidating and fearsome tone. Jaguar then started flailing, stumbling and roaring for no apparent reason. “What is it now you imbecile?” Otter growled. “Bone! Tongue! Hurts!” Jaguar yelled out. Fox thought that there is no other sight so convenient as watching a jaguar squeal as an otter picks bones out of its tongue. “So when do we leave, Otter?” Fox asked.
But the Otter didn’t seem to notice, he simply frowned and went back to picking out the fish bones from Jaguar’s tongue. “Well you see.” Otter began, “we’re not exactly too keen on leaving our home ourselves either though.” This wasn’t much of a surprise to Fox, he had been overhearing all the other jungle inhabitants and hearing how important of a place it was to them. “You still haven’t answered my question yet. I know how important of a place this is to both of you but delays will not save your friend from wherever he is, and we might as well give up on her if you’re not willing to let go of your attachment to this place.” Fox whispered to them. Otter didn’t reply, he didn’t seem to be listening at all, and Jaguar fell asleep too somehow. “I have spent half my life in this pseudo paradise, and I would spend the rest of it here too if I could, even though I know I can’t.”
Chapter 2
The Forest
“So are you a monkey or an ape or a gorilla, or some kind of proto ape? wait is there a difference?” Dog kept asking. “For The Jungle’s sake I already told you that I am a sloth! How could you take me for such… a….wild….I think I should take a nap on this tree branch.” Dog was very confused and surprised, “Aren’t apes and monkeys or whatever it was she called herself supposed to be extremely hyperactive?” He wondered. “Wake up!” Dog exclaimed, “I still do not know what kind of monkeys you are!” The loud barking did not seem to be having much of an effect on Sloth other than making her yawn and turn to her right. Dog thought that he should try barking again and decided not to after seeing that night had fallen. “Now what do I do?” Dog said to himself, yesterday he had slept in the tunnels of a nomad mongoose whom happened to not be there and in the forest every last corner of the forest was inhabited, impossible to live in, or in another animal’s territory. “I could lend you one of my hidey holes in this tree for the night if you would take up my offer.” A voice from above said. It took almost half an hour to find the source of the voice. “Hello, and what are you?” Dog asked. “I simply happen to be a horned owl and before you ask, no I do not have horns, it’s just what my species are called for a reason I am not aware of, and are you coming or not?” He said in an annoyed tone.
Dog was confused, he couldn’t possibly go up such a tall tree without any help, so he decided to bark excessively to get the owl’s attention. “You’re barking up the wrong tree, the hidey hole is in that small pine tree on the bottom of it you imp!” the owl screeched. “then why didn’t you just say so?” Dog grumbled. Apparently the so called “hidey hole” was a worm infested pear sized hole in a tree so dog had to simply sleep under one of the trees. Dog suddenly woke up, he heard the sound of people with large metal rods with wood at one end. “Psst!” said a voice from above, which turned out to be the horned owl from the day before. “What are you pssting about?” Dog yawned. “The killing humans are here that’s what! And if you want your hide to stay on you then go and run before they get you, imp!” Owl quietly screeched, at first Dog didn’t believe him until he saw firearms they were carrying.
“Hey! Come on it’s 8 P.M come on upstairs!” One of the voices said. “But it’s Friday, can’t you make an exception?” The little boy replied as he went up the stairs. “Finally!” All of the toys on the table said in unison. “I can’t believe that little boy bashes our heads together to make it look like we’re fighting.” Fox and the others grumbled. “Then I guess we just have to put up with it.” The two owls said. “I can’t believe he said we were no longer friends.” Fox and Dog both said.
